Guarding Gariwerd - a collaborative Partnerships against Pests Project
Yarrilinks, Project Platypus Upper Wimmera Landcare Network and Horsham District Landcare Network were recently successful in receiving a grant from Agriculture Victoria’s Partnerships against Pests program for a regional collaborative project building community capacity and knowledge around invasive plant and animal management.
The project, with Project Platypus as the lead organisation, began as an idea around protecting the iconic Grampians/Gariwerd from incursions of invasive species with a buffer zone around the park. That idea still remains at the core of the project, but has seen the efforts extend into the Yarrilinks and Horsham District regions. Learn more about it here.
The project involves a series of workshops and field days to allow landholders to share learnings and coordinate with the many agencies that share responsibility for invasive species management in our region. It also facilitates access to information by providing sponsored attendance to this year’s Wimmera Biodiversity Seminar - more on that here.
We’ve scheduled the first of our events as part of the project, and we’d love to have you along!
Weed Priority Session - Minyip
This session will capture the weed management priorities of the Minyip District - the group will explore how invasie weeds impact on the things they value and explore the species that are most to blame. The final product is a strategic list of weeds to focus on for control works, grant applications, and local information campaigns.
Sunday, 13th October - more info and register here!
Spring demo day - Minyip
This event will showcase a range of pest control techniques and discuss the nuts and bolts of getting the work done. Featuring a demo of warren ripping, baiting and other techniques, as well as presentations from Pest control experts from the Invasive Species Council.
