Weed Control at Lake Marma

Earlier this year we applied for a Victorian Landcare Grant in collaboration with Lake Marma Committee of Management to undertake some weed control around Lake Marma in Murtoa.

We are pleased to share that this application was successful and works will commence soon! Volunteers from the Lake Marma CoM will undertake the weed control.

Controlling environmental weeds is crucial for maintaining the balance and health of ecosystems. Weeds have the potential to outcompete native plant species, reducing biodiversity and disrupting the natural habitat for wildlife. Effective management of environmental weeds requires early detection and rapid response to prevent their establishment and spread.

Lake Marma is one of the valued natural assets in our region and provides habitat for birds, frogs, and more, as well as providing significant recreational value to the town of Murtoa.

This project will primarily focus on Bridal Creeper, Boxthorn and Cumbungi control. These species are found around the Lake, primarily on the southern end.

Works are expected to commence shortly, watch this space!

The Victorian Landcare Grants are funded by the Victorian Government through the Department of Environment, Energy and Climate Action and are administered in our region by the Wimmera CMA.
